I moved to Colorado during the summer of 2015, and I spent a lot of time going to various recreational pot shops throughout the mountains of Colorado during my time spent in the state. It didn’t take long for me to realize that all walks of life were enjoying the recreational cannabis laws in Colorado.
I was consistently surprised to see the variety of the customers of recreational marijuana stores. Maybe I was so surprised at the diversity of the crowd because I only expected to see the “typical” pot head or stoner that society has portrayed throughout the past several decades. However, it was quite the opposite.
The retirees of Colorado resort towns were always a guaranteed sighting, and a massive percentage of recreational cannabis customers are out-of-state tourists looking to enhance their vacation.
I always got a kick out of the various groups of elderly men who visited the pot shops prior to their mid-morning tee time at the golf course. Once, while standing in line with one of these older gentlemen, I commented as to how surprised I was to see so many retirees enjoying the access to legal marijuana. His response was, “Are you kidding me?! This is what my generation has been fighting for since the 1960’s”!
Younger individuals and young professionals throughout their 20’s and 30’s seemed to love the recreational cannabis laws of Colorado, as well. It really seemed that these shops had something for everyone!
I think it’s fair to say that people of all ages, races, genders and religions from all over the world use marijuana for a vast number of reasons. Generally, the most common reasons for use are due to recreational and medicinal purposes.
Marijuana is widely used for recreation as a way for individuals to relax, have fun, and tap into their more creative side. Recreational use can enhance many experiences like listening to music or making a good movie exceptionally funny. The reasons for use vary greatly from user to user, and many find that their favorite activities can be made even more enjoyable under the influence of this miraculous drug.
Medically, marijuana has been extensively researched and found to provide numerous physical and mental benefits. These benefits range from short-term relief of pain and nausea to anxiety and insomnia, and the benefits are quite extensive in terms of condition relief.
Also, many ancient civilizations have used marijuana to help in meditation rituals and to enhance their religious practices. Marijuana’s prominence of use for religious reasons is most attributed to Asian and Indian cultures.
